Taiwan Mitsui Chemicals and Nan Ya Plastics Collaborate to Develop Biomass-Based Plastics
Taiwan Mitsui Chemicals and Nan Ya Plastics (NPC) announced a collaboration to develop a market for biomass-based plastic products. Under this initiative, Nan Ya Plastics will purchase biomass-based acetone produced by Mitsui Chemicals and use it to produce biomass-derived bisphenol A (BPA) in Taiwan.
Taiwan Mitsui Chemicals obtained ISCC PLUS certification in August 2024 and began supplying biomass-derived materials to the Taiwanese market in January 2025 using a mass balance system based on this certification.
Taiwan's leading materials manufacturer Nan Ya Plastics, which also obtained ISCC PLUS certification in September 2024, will purchase biomass feedstock from Taiwan Mitsui Chemicals to produce biomass-derived BPA under this mass balance system. Nan Ya Plastics then intends to use this BPA to develop biomass plastics such as epoxy resins and polycarbonate resins.
Biomass-based acetone, BPA, and plastics can be easily used to replace existing products because they all have the same physical properties as traditional petroleum-derived chemicals and plastics. Therefore, biomass-derived materials contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving carbon neutrality throughout the product life cycle.
Taiwan Mitsui Chemicals launched a collaboration plan between the two companies in January 2025 to supply biomass-based acetone produced under a mass balance system. In the future, Taiwan Mitsui Chemicals and Nan Ya Plastics plan to expand sales of biomass-based plastic products and achieve environmental friendliness of products throughout the supply chain.
