China's Food Safety Report Reveals 60,000 Contaminated Batches Raising Alarm

A recent government-led food safety report in China has highlighted serious concerns regarding pesticide contamination, microbial contamination, and excessive food additive content in local food products. Compiled from spot checks and testing of over two million batches, the report found that more than 60,000 batches failed to meet local food safety standards.

According to the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), the analysis revealed that 39.94% of the samples showed pesticide contamination exceeding allowable limits, while 16.32% had microbial contamination. Additionally, 14.99% of the products contained food additives in excess of permitted quantities.

Despite these alarming figures, SAMR noted that the affected rates were relatively low within food categories that are staples in the Chinese diet. For instance, processed grains had a contamination rate of only 0.67%, edible oils and fats at 0.96%, meat products at 0.87%, egg products at 0.15%, and dairy products at a mere 0.13%.

In response to these findings, SAMR has taken several measures, including notifying affected companies to remove and recall products from the failed batches. The agency has also implemented stricter controls on food safety risks and mandated the proper disposal of contaminated products according to relevant regulations.

As concerns over food safety continue to rise, this report underscores the importance of maintaining rigorous standards to protect consumers and ensure the integrity of the food supply in China.
