Sun Pharma Acquires Checkpoint Therapeutics for $355 Million to Boost Onco-Dermatology Portfolio

ECHEMI 2025-03-11

In a strategic move to enhance its onco-dermatology offerings, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries has announced its acquisition of Checkpoint Therapeutics for an impressive $355 million. This acquisition is set to be completed in the second calendar quarter of 2025 and is driven by the potential of Checkpoint's FDA-approved drug, UNLOXCYT (cosibelimab-ipdl), which targets metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC).

The acquisition will see Sun Pharma paying $4.10 per share for Checkpoint’s common stock, based on the closing price from the last trading day prior to the announcement. This agreement is expected to significantly expand Sun Pharma's innovative treatment options, particularly for patients unable to undergo curative surgery or radiation.

Dilip Shanghvi, Chairman and Managing Director of Sun Pharma, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, emphasizing that combining UNLOXCYT with Sun Pharma's global reach will provide patients with vital new treatment options. James Oliviero, CEO of Checkpoint, also highlighted the importance of this partnership in delivering differentiated immunotherapy treatments to patients in need.

As Checkpoint Therapeutics continues to navigate the complexities of the oncology market, this acquisition positions Sun Pharma to leverage its extensive resources and experience to advance treatment options for cSCC. This strategic investment underscores Sun Pharma's commitment to expanding it
