Price Hikes Hit South Korea's Food Industry as McDonald's Joins Trend
On March 14, amid ongoing political turmoil, several food companies in South Korea have announced price increases, with McDonald's raising its prices for the first time in 10 months.
McDonald's Korea stated that the prices of 20 menu items will rise by 100 to 300 won (approximately 0.5 to 1.5 RMB) starting March 20, representing an average increase of 2.3%. The iconic Big Mac combo will see its price increase from 7,200 won to 7,400 won. This adjustment comes less than a year after the company raised prices on 16 items in May 2024.
Additionally, Nongshim will increase the prices of 17 products, including instant noodles and snacks, starting March 17, reverting the price of Shin Ramyeon back to 1,000 won, the same price as in June 2023. Haitai Confectionery has also raised prices on 20 items, including its popular Bibigo dumplings, effective this month. Other brands, such as Paris Baguette and Tous Les Jours, have increased the prices of cakes and bread. Furthermore, several coffee chains, including Starbucks, have implemented price hikes since January.
Critics suggest that food companies may be taking advantage of the political vacuum to raise prices. A government official noted that more than 10 food production companies have adjusted their prices this year, seemingly aiming to increase costs before any resolution to the impeachment crisis. According to data from the Statistics Office, the prices of processed foods rose by 2.9% in February, marking the highest increase in almost 13 months.
