Iraq and China Cooperate to Launch Large Petrochemical Plant and Green Industrial City

Iraqi Minister of Industry and Mines Khalid Battar Najim launched the implementation of two major industrial projects in Basra on May 14, marking a major boost to the industrial development of Iraq's "economic capital".

The first plan is Iraq's largest chlorine and caustic soda production plant, located at the Iraq Petrochemical Corporation. The plant uses modern environmentally friendly technology and has a daily output of 120 tons of caustic soda, 106 tons of liquid chlorine, 185 tons of hydrochloric acid and 150 tons of sodium hypochlorite, which are vital to the oil, industrial and water treatment industries, while also creating local jobs.

At the same time, Minister Najim launched the Green Mountain Industrial City project, the country's first development project covering an area of about 500 hectares. The project, developed by China's Tsingshan Group and Iraq's General Company for Iron and Steel, will focus on the steel and construction industries and have a modern integrated infrastructure.

The Green Industrial City is an important achievement of China-Iraq cooperation on the "Belt and Road" initiative, with an estimated total investment of more than $2 billion. The project will not only introduce China's advanced industrial technology and green manufacturing concepts, but will also improve production efficiency through intelligent management systems.
