8-Year CEO Exit Shocks Novo Nordisk as Stock Slips and Pressure Mounts
In a surprising development on May 16, Novo Nordisk announced the impending departure of CEO Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen, who has led the company through a tripling of revenue, profit, and market value over the past 8 years.
Jørgensen, who joined the firm in 1991, expressed shock at the decision. A routine video call from board chairman Helge Lund unexpectedly turned into a dismissal notice. “There were no unresolved issues or strategic disputes,” said Jørgensen, calling the decision “part of the game.”
According to Novo Nordisk’s statement, the board reached a mutual agreement with Jørgensen to initiate a CEO succession plan, citing recent market headwinds, stock decline, and input from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, which controls the company’s voting majority.
Under Jørgensen’s leadership, the company dominated the diabetes and obesity treatment sectors, with products like Wegovy and Ozempic becoming global blockbusters. However, rising competition—especially from Eli Lilly’s Zepbound and Mounjaro—has eaten into market share. The company recently cut its forecasts for Wegovy for the first time since its launch.
In Q1 alone, Zepbound’s global sales hit $2.31 billion, closing in on Wegovy’s $2.64 billion. Despite Jørgensen’s optimism that Wegovy will regain momentum in the U.S. by late 2024, investor confidence has faltered.
Adding to the shake-up, the Novo Nordisk Foundation is tightening its grip. Its chairman, Lars Rebien Sørensen—a former CEO of Novo Nordisk himself—will now attend board meetings as an observer with an eye on a full board seat by 2026.
The CEO replacement process is ongoing. For now, Jørgensen will remain in charge during the transition. Analysts voiced concern over instability, with one quipping, “If shares drop another 30%, who’d even want the CEO job?”
Novo Nordisk’s executive ranks have already seen recent exits, including two other senior leaders. The board, however, insists these events are unrelated.
The leadership overhaul comes at a critical time as the company seeks to maintain its innovation edge while defending market share. What happens next could reshape one of the world’s most valuable pharmaceutical giants.
