Carbon Fiber Revolution 100000 Hydrogen Tanks and 50000 Tons in Supply

ECHEMI 2025-06-06

A new chapter in advanced materials innovation unfolded recently as Chen Qiufei, General Manager of Zhongfu Shenying, led a team to visit Austeng Technology. Chairman Xu Wenqian warmly received the delegation, and the two parties explored the promising future of carbon fiber composites in emerging industries like new energy vehicles and low-altitude economy.

Both companies agreed that as global priorities shift toward energy efficiency and sustainability, carbon fiber composites, with their lightweight, high strength, and corrosion resistance, will play an increasingly vital role. They vowed to strengthen cooperation in technical R&D and market expansion, accelerating the material’s application in these growing sectors.

Zhongfu Shenying’s High-Performance Carbon Fiber Milestones
By the end of 2024, Zhongfu Shenying achieved an annual production capacity of 28,500 tons, with major contributions from its Lianyungang (3,500 tons) and Xining (25,000 tons) facilities. An additional 30,000–31,000 tons of capacity is under construction.

The Qinghai Xining base, the world’s largest and highest-altitude carbon fiber plant, set a record with its 2.5 million tons/year project, built at 2,600 meters above sea level. Its first phase (11,000 tons) began operating in September 2021, with the second phase (14,000 tons) following in May 2023. This project achieved 95% equipment localization, leveraging green electricity and high-altitude conditions to produce low-carbon, eco-friendly fibers for applications in wind energy equipment and hydrogen storage.

Since its launch, the Xining base has supplied nearly 50,000 tons of high-performance fibers, exporting to multiple countries and cementing its industry leadership.

Austeng Technology’s Expanding Influence
Austeng has emerged as a key innovator in carbon fiber composites, boasting an annual carbon fiber consumption exceeding 10,000 tons. It has established strong partnerships with leading global companies and earned recognition as a "Little Giant" enterprise and a single champion in manufacturing.

In its hydrogen energy division, Austeng’s subsidiary produces Type III carbon fiber-wrapped hydrogen storage tanks, aiming for an annual output of 100,000 units. These tanks target heavy trucks and logistics vehicles, promoting low-cost, clean transportation solutions.

Global Collaboration on the Rise
In addition to Zhongfu Shenying, Austeng recently hosted Shibata, Head of Carbon Fiber at Toray’s Tokyo headquarters. Future collaboration between the two firms may include raw material supply, joint R&D, and market intelligence sharing, advancing innovations in the carbon fiber industry.
