Aditya Birla Acquires Cargill Specialty Chemicals Plant

ECHEMI 2025-06-13

Indian multinational conglomerate Aditya Birla recently announced that it will acquire Cargill's 17-acre specialty chemicals production plant in Dalton, Georgia to expand its US advanced materials business. The acquisition continues Aditya Birla's expansion in US manufacturing, which is also a key part of Aditya Birla's growth strategy, which now has a total investment of more than $15 billion.

Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, said, “This acquisition marks Aditya Birla’s strategic entry into the US chemicals industry, building on the business model of our other successful US manufacturing businesses, including Novelis and Birla Carbon. Our growth strategy in the US is underpinned by our deep manufacturing expertise and commitment to supporting the resurgence of US manufacturing. We look forward to investing in and expanding this foundational plant and identifying other strategic assets to drive growth.”

The company plans to expand the plant’s current annual capacity of 16,000 tonnes to over 40,000 tonnes over the next two years, underscoring its commitment to local operations and job creation. The acquisition is being executed by Aditya Birla Chemicals (US) Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Aditya Birla Chemicals (Thailand) Ltd.

While continuing to produce formulated resins, curing agents, reactive diluents and polyaspartic resins for the marine, industrial coatings and flooring industries, marketed under the Checmure, ChemMod, Altor, Acme Shield and ChemRes brands, the Aditya Birla Group will also expand its advanced materials business with new products for the automotive, renewable energy and aerospace sectors, including proprietary chemistries for recycling epoxy composites used in wind energy, sporting goods, pressure vessels and other applications.

Rajesh Balakrishnan, CEO, Advanced Materials Business, Aditya Birla Group said, “This acquisition reinforces our commitment to expand our advanced materials business in the US and globally. Establishing a local presence in the US will enable us to serve regional customers more efficiently and work closely to develop customized solutions. We are excited to leverage this facility to enhance its capabilities and broaden our product offering to our customers.”
