Wanhua Expands PDMS Capacity to 29000 Tons Future of High-End PC Market Brightens
On June 12, Wanhua Chemical unveiled plans to expand its PDMS production capacity in Yantai Chemical Industry Park. The project involves adding two new production lines and optimizing existing facilities, increasing PDMS capacity from 9,000 tons to 29,000 tons annually. This expansion reflects Wanhua’s commitment to enhancing its role in the specialty materials sector.
PDMS Applications and Market Outlook
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), also known as dimethyl silicone oil, is a highly versatile polymer due to its excellent resistance to heat, cold, weather, and chemicals, as well as its waterproof and insulating properties. PDMS is widely used in applications like lubricants, anti-vibration materials, thermal carriers, and as additives in paints and personal care products.
When combined with PDMS monomers, polycarbonate (PC) can form silicone copolymer PC, which offers superior flame retardancy, fluidity, and low-temperature toughness. While global producers like Japan’s Teijin and LG Chem dominate the market, China’s silicone copolymer PC industry has been catching up rapidly. Companies like Wanhua Chemical and Gansu Yin Guang have made significant breakthroughs, reducing reliance on imports.
Silicone copolymer PC is increasingly demanded in 5G communications, virtual reality devices, medical instruments, new energy, and defense materials, positioning it as a critical high-performance material.
Wanhua’s Strategic Push Towards High-End Materials
In 2024, Wanhua’s PC capacity reached 600,000 tons annually, making it China’s largest producer. With plans to build a 600,000-ton PC plant in Fujian, Wanhua aims to double its capacity to 1.2 million tons per year, becoming only the third company globally to achieve such a milestone.
Despite global concerns about PC overcapacity, Wanhua and other leaders like Covestro continue to expand, focusing on higher-end markets and specialty products. Currently, China’s high-end PC products maintain a domestic production rate below 30%, leaving room for growth in fields like automotive, optical, and medical applications.
As Wanhua scales up its PDMS capacity, it aligns with its strategy to dominate high-performance materials while advancing sustainability through eco-friendly processes and recyclable materials.
