Over 70% of Patients Find Relief in Bayer’s New Breakthrough Drug for Breast Cancer Menopause Symptoms

A major breakthrough from Bayer could change the daily lives of breast cancer survivors. Results from a pivotal trial reveal that over 70% of participants taking Bayer’s experimental drug elinzanetant experienced at least a 50% reduction in troublesome hot flashes and night sweats—common complications during hormone-blocking therapy for breast cancer.

Endocrine therapy, which helps prevent tumor growth, frequently triggers severe menopause-like symptoms. While hormone replacement is not an option for these women, elinzanetant offers a non-hormonal alternative. In a year-long trial with 474 patients, 316 received the new medication while 158 took a placebo. After three months, those on elinzanetant were twice as likely to see their symptoms cut in half compared to the placebo group.

Patients also reported significantly better sleep and improved quality of life within 12 weeks. According to Dr. Fatima Cardoso, the lead researcher, addressing these symptoms is crucial because women often stop breast cancer treatment early due to discomfort, risking their long-term health.

Elinzanetant works by targeting neurokinin pathways in the brain, disrupting the biological processes responsible for hot flashes. Bayer is seeking regulatory approval in both the US and Europe, offering hope for millions who struggle with these side effects. If approved, this novel therapy could soon offer rapid relief and new hope to breast cancer patients worldwide.
