Trump Warns of 200 Percent Tariffs on Pharma Companies by August 1 India Trade Deal Among Top Priorities
President Donald Trump has issued a fresh warning to pharmaceutical manufacturers: bring production back to the US or face tariffs as high as 200% by August 1. The move, announced after an AI summit in Pittsburgh, targets drugmakers like Eli Lilly, Merck, and Pfizer that rely on overseas manufacturing.
Trump explained that an initial low tariff would be implemented, giving companies about a year to shift operations stateside before the steep rates hit. He has already launched investigations under Section 232, citing national security risks from surging drug imports. These tariffs could dramatically increase costs for both the industry and American consumers.
At a recent Cabinet meeting, Trump expressed confidence in clinching “two or three” trade agreements before the tariffs are enforced, with India singled out as a likely candidate for a deal. Talks are ongoing with five or six countries, but Trump emphasized he’s willing to proceed with tariffs if negotiations stall.
Industry stakeholders are bracing for immediate impacts on supply chains and pricing, as the pharmaceutical sector faces uncertainty in the coming weeks.
