Torrent Pharma Targets First Wave Semaglutide Launch Revenue Up 11 Percent as Patent Ends
Torrent Pharmaceuticals is preparing to enter the market for semaglutide, the blockbuster weight-loss drug, as Novo Nordisk’s patent protection expires early next year. The company aims to release both oral and injectable forms, with Phase 3 trials for oral semaglutide underway and partnerships secured for injectables.
Executives revealed that Torrent is positioned to be among the first to launch generic semaglutide, potentially enhancing its chronic medicine portfolio within the next two years. This bold move comes amid strong financials:
- Q1 revenue jumped 11% to ₹3,178 crore
- Net profit soared 20% to ₹548 crore
- Operating EBITDA rose 14% to ₹1,032 crore, with margins at 32.5%
Torrent’s upcoming launch coincides with its acquisition of JB Pharma, worth ₹11,917 crore for a 46.39% stake, triggering a mandatory open offer for additional shares. JB Chemicals shareholders will receive 51 Torrent shares for every 100 JB Chemicals shares.
With rising global demand for weight-loss therapies, Torrent’s aggressive entry into the semaglutide market could reshape its growth trajectory and shake up the diabetes and obesity drug segment in India.
