EFSA Confirms Acacia Gum Safe in Animal Feed Up to 4889 mg/kg User Sensitization Risk Highlighted
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has issued a scientific opinion confirming that acacia gum (gum Arabic) can be safely used as a feed additive for all animal species at levels between 278 and 4889 mg/kg of complete feed. This follows a request from the European Commission to assess both its safety and effectiveness.
EFSA’s expert panel found no evidence of genotoxicity and concluded acacia gum is suitable for all target animals when used as recommended. However, the review emphasized a potential risk to users: the additive may cause skin or respiratory sensitization, making exposure via skin contact or inhalation a concern.
Acacia gum was also validated for its effectiveness as an emulsifier and stabilizer, supporting its role in improving feed quality. The findings are expected to shape regulatory decisions and industry practices across the EU.
