Nepal’s Rice Planting Rate Hits 91 Percent After Heavy Rains Madesh and Koshi Regions Rebound from Drought
Last week’s strong rainfall has revived rice cultivation prospects in Nepal’s key grain belts, Madesh and Koshi, after weeks of pre-monsoon drought threatened this year’s crop. According to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development on Monday, as of August 10, the national rice planting rate reached 91%. Madesh Province reported over 76% completion, while Koshi Province surged to 94.42%.
Experts warn that, although the recent rains are a lifeline for food security, Nepal must speed up long-term irrigation infrastructure to prevent future drought setbacks. The timely weather turnaround offers hope for a stable harvest but highlights the urgent need for resilient agricultural systems.
