AstraZeneca Targets Year-End Filing for Novel Hypertension Drug Baxdrostat

ECHEMI 2025-08-31

AstraZeneca plans to submit baxdrostat for regulatory review by the end of 2025, aiming for potential approvals in 2026 starting in the U.S. and EU. Baxdrostat inhibits aldosterone, tackling a hormonal driver of hypertension rather than just symptoms.

In advanced trial results presented at a medical meeting, 2 mg baxdrostat added to standard therapy cut systolic BP by 9.8 mmHg (placebo-adjusted) at 12 weeks; 1 mg cut 8.7 mmHg. Investigators noted hyperkalaemia in ~1.1% of patients. AstraZeneca estimates >$5B peak sales, while rival lorundrostat (Mineralys) recently showed a 9.1 mmHg reduction at six weeks. Unmet need in resistant hypertension remains high worldwide.
