Kansai Paint Announces 5%–20% Price Hike Amid Cost Pressures

ECHEMI 2025-09-01

Japanese coatings giant Kansai Paint is raising product prices to cope with mounting cost pressures. The company’s sales unit announced that effective September 20, it will implement a 5%–20% price increase on its paints and thinners in the domestic market. Kansai Paint cited the need to offset rising raw material costs and other overheads that have been squeezing profitability. This move follows similar price adjustments by other paint makers in recent months as the industry grapples with higher prices for solvents, resins, and pigments, as well as elevated energy and logistics expenses.

The announcement has reverberated through the coatings industry in Japan, as a 20% hike at the top end is relatively steep. Customers are being notified of the upcoming adjustments, which will vary by product line. Industry observers say the pricing action underscores how inflationary pressures are compelling manufacturers to pass on costs. It “once again highlights the challenges the paint sector faces” in balancing competitive pricing with margin preservation. Despite short-term risk of demand pushback, the expectation is that most buyers – from automotive to construction sectors – will absorb the increases given the essential nature of coatings and the across-the-board trend of rising materials costs.
