Downstream Demand Weak, Soda Ash Market Continues to Operate Weakly in China

ECHEMI 2025-09-10

September 9th, according to reports

I. Price Trends

According to the commodity analysis system, on September 8, the price of light soda ash remained stable, with the market average price at 1186 CNY/ton. Compared to the beginning of the month when the price was 1210 CNY/ton, it has decreased by 24 CNY/ton, a price decrease of 1.98% from the start of the month.

II. Market Analysis

Since September, the soda ash market in China has continued to operate weakly. In terms of demand, downstream follow-up has been average, with low enthusiasm for entering the market and only a small amount of low-price, essential purchases. On the supply side, the overall capacity utilization rate of soda ash in China has increased, leading to a rise in inventory volume. Some companies have lowered their transaction prices to promote sales, and the market continues to be characterized by strong supply and weak demand.

On the demand side: According to the commodity analysis system, glass market prices have fluctuated narrowly since September. As of the 8th, the average market price stood at 14.00 yuan per square meter, representing a price increase of 0.86% compared to the beginning of the month. Glass production lines remain stable, with end-users making small, incremental purchases. Trading activity within the market remains decent, and supply-demand dynamics are relatively balanced. Meanwhile, some companies are experiencing strong sales, prompting a slight upward adjustment in glass prices.

Looking ahead, the current spot market for soda ash in China remains predominantly weak and stable. Market inventories are relatively high, leading to a lack of confidence among industry players. Meanwhile, downstream glass manufacturers are primarily driven by immediate demand, providing limited support for soda ash prices. As supply and demand continue to balance within the market, it’s expected that soda ash prices will likely consolidate at lower levels in the near term—though the exact direction will ultimately depend on the evolving needs of the downstream glass industry.
