Celanese Partners with Cloverdale Paint to Deliver Sustainable Coatings Solutions

ECHEMI 2025-01-13

Cloverdale Paint has announced a partnership with Celanese Corporation, a global specialty materials and chemicals company, which will leverage its Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technology to deliver new market sustainable coatings solutions to Cloverdale Paint.

Celanese has commercialized a method for converting waste emissions into renewable feedstocks through CCU. The technology utilizes industrial CO2 that would otherwise be emitted into the atmosphere and uses hydrogen to chemically convert the captured CO2 into a methanol feedstock that can be used as part of a vinyl acetate-based emulsion used as a feedstock in paint manufacturing.

The process reduces fossil fuel inputs, promotes a circular economy, and significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to conventional processes. CCU and fossil fuel-based feedstocks are blended but accurately tracked through mass balance accounting, providing greater transparency and accountability for sustainable content.
Cloverdale Paint’s collaboration with Celanese leverages both companies’ commitment to sustainability and innovation. Overall, the collaboration is expected to reduce over 1 million pounds of CO2 emissions per year in products manufactured by Cloverdale Paint.

"Our Green Guarantee reflects our commitment to a green economy and environmental responsibility by utilizing sustainable materials, optimizing processes to minimize waste, and reducing our carbon footprint at every stage of our company's operations," said Darrin Noble, President and COO of Cloverdale Paint.

"Our paints are designed not only for performance and longevity, but also with an unwavering focus on sustainability, ensuring they actively contribute to environmental protection. We adhere to the highest environmental standards while providing exceptional products that empower people to make environmentally responsible choices. This partnership with Celanese is not only a major step forward for Cloverdale Paint, but for the paint industry as a whole."

"We are excited to work with Cloverdale Paint to leverage the power of CCU to accelerate low-carbon choices in an industry that plays a critical role in everyday life," said Kevin Norfleet, Global Sustainability Director, Celanese Acetyls. "This is just one example of the potential opportunities for CCU, a powerful option to reduce the carbon footprint of products while creating a more circular economy."
