Evonik launches a new water-based epoxy curing agent specially developed for freight container coatings

ECHEMI 2021-10-29

In order to further meet the market demand of container manufacturers for both environmentally friendly and high-performance coatings, Evonik has officially launched Anquamine® 469, a new water-based epoxy curing agent specially developed for container coatings.

Chinese containermanufacturers focus on water-based anticorrosive coatings. At present, more than 85% of global containers are produced in China. In the past 15 years, China's market share has continued to expand and has become the dominant player in the global freight container market.

Since 2017, China has implemented strict environmental regulations to reduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions. As a result, all Chinese freight container manufacturers must change their original product technology routes and production models, and upgrade solvent-based coatings. It is a more environmentally friendly water-based paint.

In this transition, coating suppliers are vigorously developing water-based container coatings, while maintaining or even improving coating performance, while ensuring maximum environmental benefits, helping container manufacturers achieve the goal of reducing emissions and achieving environmental development.

Locally developed new waterborne epoxy curing agent

Driven by this market demand, Evonik, through local research and development, deeply explored the needs of downstream coating customers and container customers, and launched a new water-based epoxy curing agent Anquamine® 469 specially developed for container coatings. This curing agent can reduce VOC emissions, has excellent anti-corrosion properties, and can quickly build coating performance, thereby helping manufacturers improve production efficiency.

Anquamine® 469 is the latest product in Evonik's high-performance water-based curing agent series. It can also provide outstanding early coating performance in high temperature and high humidity environments, ensuring a faster drying speed, heat-resistant water, styrene-resistant putty, and relatively high temperature and humidity. The long coating operation time is very suitable for industrial protective coatings exposed to highly corrosive marine environments.

This innovative product was developed by the cross-functional team of Evonik Shanghai Innovation Park. The upgraded Shanghai Innovation Park integrates basic research, product development, process development, experimental plants, application technology, and testing and analysis services to meet local, Asia-Pacific and global R&D needs.

Zhen Qihong, vice president of Evonik’s crosslinking agent business line in Asia Pacific, said: “We are committed to developing environmentally friendly products to support the long-term sustainable development of the Chinese coatings industry. Combining local innovative technology capabilities and research on downstream application trends, we have The ability to meet customer needs is evidenced by the latest product innovations."

Anquamine® 469 water-based epoxy curing agent can also be applied to various industrial, transportation, and construction machinery coatings. While meeting the performance requirements of high strength and anti-corrosion, it helps manufacturers achieve environmental protection and low emission goals.
