What Is Neon? Your Go-To Guide + Neon at Room Temperature

Neon is a colorless, odorless gas at room temperature and is lighter than air. One reason it stays gaseous so easily is its extremely low boiling point of –246°C, which reflects the weak forces between its atoms. Although neon exists only in trace amounts within the Earth’s atmosphere, tiny pockets of it are trapped in the planet’s crust.

  

Neon at Everyday Conditions

As a noble gas in Group 18, neon is chemically inert and rarely forms compounds. It makes up only about 0.0018% of dry air by volume, yet studies show it is several times more abundant in the atmosphere than helium. On a cosmic scale, neon is far more common—it ranks among the universe’s most plentiful elements.

When a low-pressure tube of neon is struck by an electrical current, it produces a bright orange-red glow. This discovery is credited to Georges Claude, who revealed the first neon lamp in Paris in 1910. By the 1920s, neon signage had become a phenomenon, with its vivid “liquid fire” effect drawing crowds even during the daytime. Today, pure neon gas still produces only a red-orange light; other sign colors require different gases or phosphor coatings.

Beyond advertising, neon is used in high-voltage indicators, plasma displays, gaseous conduction lamps, and scientific equipment. Its name comes from the Greek word neos, meaning “new.”

 

Working With Neon

Neon atoms exist on their own, not in molecules, and no stable neon compounds are known. Because its boiling point is so low, neon remains gaseous when most other air components have condensed. This makes extraction difficult: roughly 40,000 kg of liquid air must be processed to obtain just 0.45 kg of neon. Fractional distillation of liquid air—followed by removal of helium using activated charcoal—is the standard purification method. 

Natural neon consists of three stable isotopes: Ne-20, Ne-21, and Ne-22. A total of 12 radioactive isotopes have also been identified. Neon is non-toxic and has no confirmed biological function, but it plays a valuable role as a cryogenic refrigerant. Per unit volume, liquid neon provides significantly greater cooling capacity than liquid helium or hydrogen.

 

In short, neon is a rare but remarkable noble gas—chemically inert, brilliantly luminous when electrified, and highly valued for both cryogenic and lighting applications.
