Wittmann Revises Rotational Axes for Robots

Wittmann Group has completely revised additional rotational axes for its W821 and W321 series of compact robots, for molding technical parts that have longer mold cooling times — so the automation can take advantage of this longer cycle time to execute downstream automation handling.

The standard models have three linear servo axes and a pneumatic swivel axis. The vertical axis has a stroke of 1,400 millimeters, with a maximum payload of 26 pounds. In case an additional C-axis should be needed — say, for orientation of the gripper towards the part, using any angle — the maximum payload is nearly unchanged, the company said.

If a servo-rotational B-axis is added, rotating the gripper around the vertical axis, the payload is lowered slightly, to 22 pounds.

Using these different combinations of axes — either a servo B and C axis or a servo B axis combined with a pneumatic C-axis — any horizontal orientation of the parts can be achieved.

The robots also can be used in combination with additional palletizing actions. Using a servo B axis also offers the operator the option of removing parts either from the moving half or the fixed half.
