Analysis of China's Coal Industry Market from January to July 2019

According to China Customs data, China's coal and lignite imports grew in the first quarter of 2019. In July of 2019, China's coal and lignite imports grew by 13.4% compared with the same period last year. In cumulative terms, China's coal and lignite imports reached 187.364 million tons from January to July 2019, an increase of 7% compared with the same period last year. In terms of import amount, in July 2019, the import amount of coal and lignite in China was US$2654 million, down 4.1% from the same period last year. On the cumulative side, China's coal and lignite imports from January to July 2019 amounted to $14743.01 million, down 4.1% from the same period last year.
Statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics show that the total output of raw coal in China in 2018 was 35459.08 million tons, an increase of 5.2% over the same period last year. The output of raw coal in China increased gradually in the first quarter of 2019. By July of 2019, the output of raw coal in China was 322.227 million tons, up 12.2% year on year, and the growth rate was 1.8 percentage points faster than that of last month. The average daily output is 10.39 million tons, which is 720,000 tons less than last month. Accumulatively, from January to July 2019, China's raw coal output reached 2088.554 million tons, an increase of 4.3% over the same period last year. China's coal and lignite exports declined in the quarter of January-February 2019. In July 2019, China's coal and lignite exports reached 662,000 tons, an increase of 55.8% over the same period last year. In total, China's coal and lignite exports reached 3.64 million tons from January to July 2019, an increase of 30.5% over the same period last year. In terms of export amount, China's coal and lignite exports in July 2019 amounted to $91 million, an increase of 50.9% over the same period last year. On the cumulative side, China's coal and lignite exports amounted to $594.05 million from January to July 2019, an increase of 31.9% over the same period last year.
