In its International Energy Outlook 2019, the U.S. Energy Information Agency predicts that world energy consumption will increase by nearly 50% between 2018 and 2050. EIA predicts that most of the growth will come from regions where energy consumption is driven by strong economic growth, especially in non-OECD Asia. The annual long-term assessment of the world energy market by environmental impact assessment includes a reference case and four core supporting cases, each of which uses different assumptions for prediction.

"in 2018, Asia's energy consumption is higher than any other region. We expect that energy consumption in Asia will almost double between 2018 and 2050, making Asia the largest energy consumption and fastest growing region in the world," said Linda Capuano, director of environmental impact assessment. This long-term trend in energy consumption in Asia has had a tremendous impact on the exploitation, refining and transportation of oil, natural gas and other fuels

IEO 2019 contains energy consumption forecasts for 16 regions of the world. The predictions of the United States in the International Energy Outlook 2019 are consistent with those published in the Annual Energy Outlook 2019. Environmental impact assessment does not mean that the International Environment Outlook 2019 is the most likely forecast for the future, but the baseline for assessing the impact of policy or technological changes. Four other cases show the impact of changing other key model assumptions.
