Evonik launches non-animal collagen platform
Recently, Evonik announced that the company's recombinant non-animal-derived collagen platform Vecollan was officially commercialized. Vecollan is a high-purity soluble collagen produced by a fermentation process. Its unique triple-helix structure mimics the properties of natural collagen, making it suitable for medical, pharmaceutical, cell culture, tissue engineering and other life science applications.
Evonik said that Vecollan is a new and differentiated system solution designed by Evonik for the medical device industry, and is provided to customers through the Evonik Medical Device Technology Centers in Birmingham, Alabama, Darmstadt, Germany and Shanghai, China. Support in application, R&D and manufacturing services. It uses a fermentation-based preparation process developed by Creavis, the strategic innovation division of Evonik, and relies on the biotechnology platform of the Nutrition and Consumer Chemicals business unit. The business unit aims to increase the market share of system solutions from the current 20% to more than 50% by 2030.
According to Evonik, animal-derived collagen is currently mainly used in the life science and pharmaceutical fields, so there are quality differences between different batches, the transmission of potential diseases or pathogens, and the possibility of causing adverse immune reactions or allergic reactions. In addition, its procurement model is not sustainable. Vecollan, as a natural equivalent material, reacts reliably with cells and tissues and is effectively absorbed or remodeled by the body. This high-purity collagen is prepared under strictly controlled conditions to ensure the safety, sustainability and scalability of the entire process.
