What Is Acid Wash

The method of removing oxidation and rust from steel surfacesusing an acid solution is called acid wash. It is a method of cleaning metalsurfaces. It is usually done together with pre-passivating treatment.

Steel parts are generally pickled in a 10% to 20% (by volume)sulfuric acid solution at 40°C. When the iron content inthe solution is more than 80 percent, the pickling process is carried out at 40°C. When the iron content in the solution exceeds 80g/L andferrous sulfate exceeds 215g/L, the pickling solution should be replaced. Atroom temperature, pickling of steel with 20% to 80% (by volume) hydrochloricacid solution is not easy to occur over corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement.

I found one reference instructing to wash 30 g of sand twicewith 0.05 M sulfuric acid, then four times with distilled water.

However, other references instructing to use onlyhydrochloric acid and de-ionized water, but have not specified how much or theconcentration.
