Can fish oil replace statin lipid-lowering medications?
Many studies on deep-sea fish oil in recent years have found that it does not actually prevent cardiovascular disease. On the one hand, it is because fish oil loses a lot of DHA and EPA during the production process, and the content of DHA and EPA in regular health food fish oil is only about 30%.
On the other hand, it is only a health food, and although it can mildly regulate blood lipids, studies have shown that it has only a mild effect on lowering triglycerides, and a very limited effect on cholesterol. The American Heart Association's statement on "Omega 3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids/Fish Oil Supplements and the Prevention of Clinical Cardiovascular Disease" only recommends fish oil supplementation along with lipid-lowering medications for patients with coronary heart disease and heart failure.
In addition, people with high risk factors such as hypertension, smoking, and diabetes are more advised by experts to prevent cardiovascular disease through lifestyle improvements rather than by taking fish oil.
