Pirelli to launch lignin-containing passenger tires
Recently, Pirelli Tire Company said it plans to launch passenger tires with lignin filler later this year. The filler is produced through an innovative process technology as a sustainable alternative to carbon black.
It is reported that this variety of tires has been used for bicycle tires for the first time. Pirelli says the use of lignin in the rubber compounding process helps improve the mechanical strength of the rubber. Pirelli has carried out years of research and development for this purpose, using new chemical treatment and co-precipitation technology to successfully mix lignin into rubber compounds. Since 2020, Pirelli has been using lignin in bicycle tires, especially for e-bike tires. Pirelli expects to sell lignin-containing passenger tires in Europe by the end of this year. It is reported that the lignin filler content in the tire compound under development is about 15%, which means that half of the carbon black is replaced, and the first lignin-filled tire may be used for replacement tires.
