Bronze syndrome in infants
Bronze baby syndrome is a complication of phototherapy. In 1972, Kopeman first reported a premature infant (weight 1474g) with serum bilirubin of 359.1μmol/L (21mg%) and direct bilirubin of 137μmol/L (8.0mg%) 4 days after birth, which is the symptom of neonatal jaundice. After 48 hours of phototherapy, the baby's skin turned gray-brown, and the serum and urine were similar in color, so it was named "bronze baby syndrome".
