Furunculus and furunculosis are acute suppurative deep folliculitis and inflammation around the hair follicles caused by Staphylococcus aureus invading the hair follicles. Recurrent and multiple furuncles are called furunculosis, which is often protracted and difficult to heal. It is more common in adolescence and adulthood, and more common in males than in females.
