Astrocytic tumors refer to tumors composed of astrocytes and are the most common neuroepithelial tumors. They are divided into grades I to IV. Grade I tumors mostly grow in the white matter of the brain in adults and are divided into two types: protoplasmic and fibrous. Grade II tumors are poorly differentiated astrocytomas, or astrocytomas. The course of these two types of diseases progresses slowly. Grade III to IV astrocytomas are glioblastoma multiforme, which are highly malignant and common after middle age. Astrocytomas can occur in any part of the central nervous system. Generally, they are more common in the brain in adults and in the subtentorial part in children. It has been reported that 3/4 of them are supratentorial and 1/4 are infratentorial. Those that occur supratentorially are more common in the frontal and temporal lobes, followed by the parietal lobe, and less common in the occipital lobe. The tumor can involve more than two lobes of the brain. It can also be seen beside the optic nerve, thalamus and third ventricle, while those infratentorially are mostly located in the cerebellar hemispheres and fourth ventricle, and can also be seen in the cerebellar vermis and brainstem.
