Special Population Medication
Precautions for children: There is currently a lack of detailed research data. Precautions for pregnancy and lactation: Sufficient animal studies have confirmed that ribavirin has obvious mutagenicity and embryotoxicity (which can occur at less than 1/20 of the human dose). Ribavirin can cause congenital malformations or death of the fetus. Before the start of treatment, during treatment, and for at least 6 months after stopping the drug, both men and women taking ribavirin should avoid pregnancy. Those who may become pregnant should use at least two or more contraceptive methods to effectively prevent pregnancy. If they become pregnant, they should immediately inform their doctor. Ribavirin is prohibited for pregnant women. A small amount of the drug is excreted through breast milk. Because of the potential danger to infants, it is not recommended for breastfeeding women to take ribavirin. Precautions for the elderly: Sufficient clinical studies have not been conducted on elderly patients over 65 years old. The possibility of anemia in elderly patients using ribavirin is greater than that in young patients. The renal function of the elderly is often reduced, which can easily lead to accumulation. Ribavirin is not recommended for elderly patients.

Ribavirin can inhibit the conversion of zidovudine into active zidovudine phosphate. Therefore, ribavirin and zidovudine have an antagonistic effect when used together.
