Description	Alprostadil, also known as PGE1, is a vasodilator that can treat impotence. Alprostadil inhibits platelet aggregation and is a vasodilator in vivo. Alprostadil is a drug used in the continuous treatment of erectile dysfunction and has vasodilatory properties. Alprostadil is also used in maintaining a patent ductus arteriosus in newborns. Alprostadil is also used for critical limb ischemia. It increases blood flow by peripheral vasodilation within five minutes and induces angiogenesis.

Alprostadil More Info

Alprostadil is a medication used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and to maintain temporary patency of the ductus arteriosus in newborns with congenital heart diseases before surgical intervention. It is a synthetic analog of prostaglandin E1 and works by activating adenylate cyclase, increasing CAMP levels, leading to smooth muscle relaxation and vasodilation, which aids in achieving an erection. Additionally, Alprostadil inhibits platelet aggregation.

Precautions include: it is contraindicated in patients allergic to Alprostadil or its components; patients with sickle cell disease, multiple myeloma, leukemia, and other conditions that may lead to priapism should avoid its use; and patients with Peyronie's disease (penile fibrosis) should not use it as Alprostadil may worsen the condition. Monitoring of blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and penile pathology, such as fibrosis and hematoma formation, is necessary during treatment.
