3. Chemical properties

The iodine ions in potassium iodide have strong reducibility and are easily oxidized to elemental iodine when left in air for a long time, causing the solid surface to turn yellow. The reaction equation is: 4KI+O ₂+2H ₂ O=4KOH+2I ₂.

Can react with many metal ions to generate corresponding iodide precipitates. For example, it reacts with silver nitrate to form a yellow precipitate of silver iodide, and the reaction equation is: KI+AgNO3=AgI ↓+KNO3.

It can undergo complexation reaction with elemental iodine to generate potassium iodide (KI) that is easily soluble in water. This property is commonly used for quantitative analysis of iodine and for enhancing its dissolution. The reaction equation is: KI+I ₂ ⇌ KI ∝.

Medical field

As a preventive and therapeutic drug for thyroid diseases, it can be used for the prevention and treatment of endemic goiter, as well as for preparation before surgery for hyperthyroidism.

It is an important raw material for iodine contrast agents, used for contrast in imaging examinations such as X-rays and CT scans.

As a nutritional enhancer added to table salt to prevent iodine deficiency disorders.
