Ammonium chloride is the main by-product of the production of soda ash by the combined alkali process. It is a white crystalline solid that is easy to absorb moisture and agglomerate. It is easy to decompose when heated. Ammonium chloride will undergo hydrolysis in water and decompose into ammonia and hydrogen chloride gas when heated. It reacts with alkaline oxides and can also react with sulfuric acid to produce ammonium bisulfate and hydrogen chloride. It is used in industry for metal welding, electroplating, tanning, and making dry batteries. It is used as an inhibitor of arsenic minerals in mineral processing, and for the leaching of non-ferrous metals and the refining of rare and precious metals in metal smelting. It is also used to prepare flux for tin-plating and galvanizing metals, remove rust, and as an electrolyte for carbon-zinc dry batteries. It is used as a nitrogen fertilizer in agriculture and is suitable for crops such as rice, wheat, and cotton.
