Trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) is a colorless crystalline compound that dissolves in water and polar solvents but remains insoluble in nonpolar solutions. It is a crucial cross-linking agent in the formulation of polymers, resins, and coatings and is used as a photoinitiator for UV-reactive coatings and inks. Additionally, Trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) acts as a chelating agent in the treatment of heavy metal toxicity, and it is used to modify high internal phase emulsions to extract heavy metals from water.
Trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) may be used in the following studies:

Preparation of hydrogels, via crosslinking inulin derivatives.
Construction of porous hybrid monolithic materials.
As monomer for the preparation of a new thiol-ene based polymeric fluorescence sensor, via photo initiated polymerization.
