     DMF is a colorless and transparent liquid that is mutually soluble with water and most organic solvents. Pure DMF is a special smell, industrial grade or metamorphic DMF is fishy smell, because it contains dimethylam impure matter. The name comes from the fact that it is a dimethy substitute of formamide, and that both methyl groups are located on N atoms. It is a common solvent for chemical reactions. As a high boiling point polar (hydrophilic) aprotic solvent, it can promote the SN₂ reaction mechanism. DMF is made from methyl formate and dimethylam. DMF is unstable in the presence of strong bases such as sodium hydroxide or strong acids such as hydrochlori acid or sulfuric acid (especially at high temperatures) and is hydrolyzed to formic acid and dimethylam. The formula is HCON(CH₃)₂+H₂O → (CH₃)₂NH+HCOOH.
