Sulfacetamide Sodium  is a synthetic sulfonamide antibiotic with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, widely used in the field of ophthalmology and dermatology for treating bacterial infections.

• Physical Appearance : White to off-white crystalline powder, highly soluble in water and slightly soluble in ethanol.
• Mechanism of Action : It exerts antibacterial effects by inhibiting the synthesis of folic acid in bacteria. Folic acid is an essential substance for bacterial growth and reproduction; blocking its synthesis can suppress bacterial proliferation and achieve bacteriostatic effects. It is active against a variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Main Applications

1. Ophthalmology It is the most common application field of sulfacetamide sodium. It is usually formulated into eye drops or ointments to treat bacterial eye infections, including:
   • Bacterial conjunctivitis
   • Blepharitis
   • Corneal ulcers
   • Other superficial ocular infections caused by susceptible bacteria
2. Dermatology It can be compounded with other ingredients (e.g., sulfur) into topical preparations to treat acne vulgaris, rosacea, and other skin conditions associated with bacterial colonization.

Usage and Precautions

• Administration Route : Mostly topical (eye drops/ointment for eyes, cream/lotion for skin); systemic administration is rare due to potential side effects.
• Contraindications : Hypersensitivity to sulfacetamide sodium, other sulfonamides, or any components of the preparation is strictly prohibited.
• Adverse Reactions : Local irritation may occur, such as eye redness, itching, stinging (for ophthalmic preparations); or skin dryness, burning sensation (for dermatological preparations). Severe allergic reactions are rare but require immediate discontinuation and medical attention.
