Propofol is a powerful, rapid-acting intravenous anesthetic and sedative used to induce and maintain general anesthesia, provide sedation for procedures, and keep critically ill patients on mechanical ventilation comfortable. It works quickly by enhancing the brain's inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, leading to rapid unconsciousness and quick recovery, but its rapid effects and potential for severe blood pressure drop or breathing suppression mean it must be given by trained professionals.

Mechanism of action

Propofol enhances the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that slows down brain activity, causing central nervous system depression.

Side Effects

Blood Pressure: Can cause significant drops in blood pressure (hypotension).

Breathing: Can slow or stop breathing (respiratory depression).

Other: Drowsiness, dizziness, potential for allergic reactions (rare).
