Oxytocin

Oxytocin is a recombinant hormonal agent that induces or augments uterine contractions in pregnant individuals, supporting labor and delivery as well as the management of postpartum hemorrhage.

First discovered by Sir Henry H. Dale in 1906, oxytocin was identified for its uterine contractile activity at that time. As a neurohypophysial hormone, it consists of nine amino acids with a disulfide bond connecting the cysteine residues at positions 1 and 6— a structural feature shared by all hormones of this class. In the mid-1950s, biochemist Vincent du Vigneaud achieved the first successful synthesis of oxytocin, a groundbreaking work that later earned him a Nobel Prize. To this day, oxytocin remains a cornerstone of modern obstetric practice, used to induce labor when clinically indicated and to treat postpartum hemorrhage; it is estimated that oxytocin-mediated labor induction is utilized in nearly 10% of childbirths worldwide.

Notably, oxytocin administration during childbirth carries potential risks. It must therefore be prescribed and administered prudently, only when medically necessary, and by skilled healthcare providers with relevant clinical experience.

While most closely associated with labor and delivery, oxytocin exerts extensive peripheral and central physiological effects. It plays a pivotal role in pair bonding, social cognition and social functioning, and even fear conditioning. Additionally, oxytocin is involved in the regulation of metabolic homeostasis and cardiovascular function.
