Pharmacological effects:
1. On the digestive system: A 25% aqueous extract of Cardamom (0.25g of crude drug/mL) given to rats at 10mL/kg resulted in a significant reduction in the relative residual rate of pigments in the stomach and a significant increase in the intestinal propulsion rate, indicating that Cardamom can promote gastric emptying and intestinal propulsion. The 10 and 40g/kg oral administration of Cardamom extract to dogs with Hartmann's small stomach resulted in no effect on gastric acid and serum gastrin concentration, but could promote the secretion of somatostatin. Cardamom can accelerate the emptying of the stomach of barium sulfate and promote the release of endogenous motilin. It had no effect on the basic electrical rhythm of the normal human stomach.
2. On the cardiovascular system: Cardamom and its extracts have a vasopressor effect, while the alkaloids, lactones, and de-lactone volatile oil have a vasodilator effect. Cardamom has a mild pressor reaction when stimulating the cat's heart. Intravenous injection of the water extract had a mild pressor effect in anesthetized dogs. Intravenous injection of de-lactone volatile oil, total lactone, cardamonine, dihydrocardamonin, dehydrocardamonin, or 12-methoxy dihydrocardamonin could lower the blood pressure of anesthetized dogs, with the hypotensive effect lasting at least 15 minutes.
