Ectoine, chemically known as tetrahydro-methylpyrimidine carboxylic acid, is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative belonging to the extremolyte family. It was first discovered in halophilic bacteria inhabiting extreme environments such as salt lakes and deserts, serving as a protective substance for these microorganisms against harsh conditions including high temperatures, high salinity, aridity, and ultraviolet radiation.
