Product Detail

Sorbitol, also known as sorbitol, hexitol, or D-sorbitol, is a non-volatile polyalcohol with stable chemical properties. It is resistant to oxidation by air and readily soluble in water, hot ethanol, methanol, isopropanol, butanol, cyclohexanol, phenol, acetone, acetic acid, and dimethylformamide. Widely distributed in natural plant fruits, it is resistant to microbial fermentation and exhibits excellent heat resistance, remaining stable even at high temperatures (200°C). Initially isolated from mountain strawberries by French scientists like Boussingault, its saturated aqueous solution has a pH of 6–7. As an isomer of mannitol, threitol, and galactitol, it possesses a cool, sweet taste with 65% the sweetness of sucrose and very low caloric content. With strong hygroscopicity, it finds extensive applications in food, daily chemical, and pharmaceutical industries. In food, it prevents drying and aging, extends shelf life, effectively inhibits crystallization of sugars and salts, and maintains the balance of sweet, sour, and bitter intensities while enhancing flavor. It can be produced by hydrogenating glucose under heated and pressurized conditions in the presence of a nickel catalyst.
