      Product Detail

Product Name: Silicon Powder (also known as Micro-silicon or Crystalline/Amorphous Silicon Powder)
    Chemical Symbol: Si
    CAS Number: 7440-21-3

    Physical Properties

    • Appearance: Dark gray to black solid with a metallic luster. Depending on the manufacturing process, it can appear as irregular particles, spherical shapes, or fine flakes.
    • Melting Point: Extremely high, at approximately 1,414 °C.
    • Boiling Point: Around 3,265 °C.
    • Density: ~2.33 g/cm³ (for crystalline silicon).
    • Solubility: Insoluble in water, acids (except hydrofluoric acid), and most organic solvents.
    • Particle Size: Commercially available in various mesh sizes or micrometer/nanometer scales, which significantly affects its reactivity and specific surface area.

    Chemical Properties

    • Chemical Stability: At room temperature, bulk silicon powder is relatively stable and chemically inert due to a thin protective oxide layer on its surface. However, ultra-fine or nano-scale silicon powder is highly reactive.
    • Reactivity with Acids & Alkalis: It dissolves slowly in hot concentrated alkali solutions (like NaOH or KOH) to release hydrogen gas. It is readily attacked by a mixture of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid.
    • Flammability & Oxidation: Finely divided silicon powder is combustible and poses a significant dust explosion hazard when suspended in air. When heated in oxygen, it burns vigorously to form silicon dioxide (SiO₂).
    • Incompatibility: Chemically incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, halogens (such as fluorine and chlorine), and interhalogen compounds. Contact with these materials can trigger violent exothermic reactions or fires.

    Main Applications

    • Semiconductor & Electronics Industry: High-purity silicon powder serves as the foundational raw material for producing monocrystalline and polycrystalline silicon wafers, which are essential for manufacturing integrated circuits, microchips, and solar cells.
    • Alloy Manufacturing: Widely used as an alloying element in metallurgy, particularly in the production of aluminum-silicon alloys (used in automotive parts) and specialty steels, improving fluidity, strength, and corrosion resistance.
    • Silicone Production: Acts as a primary feedstock for synthesizing organosilicon monomers (like dimethyldichlorosilane), which are then polymerized into silicone rubbers, sealants, oils, and resins.
    • Powder Metallurgy & Advanced Materials: Utilized in the sintering of advanced ceramics, refractory materials, and conductive pastes. Amorphous silicon powder is also increasingly researched as a high-capacity anode material for next-generation lithium-ion batteries.
