Description

Cefovecin is a cephalosporin antibiotic used for the treatment of skin infections in cats and dogs. It is the first single-dose injectable antibiotic for dogs and cats that assures owner compliance with dosing for the animal. It is used for the treatment of skin infections caused by Pasturella multocida in cats, and Staphylococcus intermedius/S. canis in dogs. The advantage of using injectable antibiotics is not missing a dose that can allow partially resistant microbes to recover during missed doses. However, these injectable agents can present long-lasting subtherapeutic concentrations after the resolution of infection. The presence of low concentrations of antibiotics is related to the development of microbial resistance.|Cefovecin is a semisynthetic, broad-spectrum, third-generation cephalosporin with antibacterial activity. Cefovecin binds to and inactivates penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. PBPs are enzymes involved in the terminal stages of assembling the bacterial cell wall and in reshaping the cell wall during growth and division. Inactivation of PBPs interferes with the cross-linkage of peptidoglycan chains necessary for bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity. This results in the weakening of the bacterial cell wall and causes cell lysis.
