Affected by the epidemic, the global apple and juice market will be hit hard!
According to recent news from Ukraine, Andre Yalmark, economist of the investment department of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), wrote in EastFruit that due to coronaviruses and low oil prices, global apples and concentrated juices may suffer huge losses. This means that horticultural crops will experience an unusual season.
Yarmark wrote in the article that for many years, the world apple trade has fluctuated at the level of 8 billion US dollars, but it has shown a downward trend. This is mainly because apple production in all major apple producing countries and some developing countries is increasing, while competition for other fruits and berries in the consumer market is also increasing.
He believes that in 2020, Apple's trade volume may fall by 1.0 billion to 1.2 billion US dollars, which will cause direct losses to export professional households. The main reason is the decline in global consumer income, currency devaluation and complex logistics. This will be a record year for Apple ’s trade decline in history. The economist predicts that the reduction in global demand for Apple will cause prices to fall, because Apple will not be able to immediately reduce production.
As for Ukraine, the apple export market is gradually diversifying, but half of it is still sent to Russia through Moldova and Belarus. The EU is the second largest consumer market for Ukrainian apples. Ukrainian apples are competitive in the EU, but prices may fall sharply. The UAE ’s demand for Ukrainian apples will also decrease sharply, as the country ’s tourist traffic, which determines Apple ’s sales, is almost completely lost, and its oil export profits have also fallen sharply.
Yarmark believes that Southeast Asia is the most attractive consumer market in terms of price, but the market there is fiercely competitive because there are Chinese apples, as well as apples from the United States, New Zealand, South Africa, Italy and France.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic and the restrictive measures taken, Ukrainian apple exports have decreased by 38%.
