BASF launches new, graphite reinforced polystyrene insulation material
BASF announced that an energy-efficient residential solution jointly developed by the US Energy Building Project and jointly developed by the New Jersey Institute of Technology has been released.
The specific implementation content of the project is to incorporate BASF's graphite polystyrene composite rigid foam insulation material into the existing residential renovation project.
The project will first test and verify the performance of this new material in the New York area. The specific method is to install this composite material named Neopor under the exterior wall to improve the insulation and weather resistance of the residence. The usual residential renovation cycle is 25 years, and the project will be provided as an alternative to owners who intend to save energy. According to BASF's North American Neopor project, the graphite in the polymer matrix can reflect and absorb heat energy, increasing the thermal resistance of the material, which can improve energy efficiency. The partner New Jersey Institute of Technology will train installation contractors, including energy modelling, and test and evaluate the effects of building improvements.
BASF's Neopor insulation material has three major characteristics, which not only improves the fire resistance and reaches the B-level standard, but also reduces the conductivity, with a thermal conductivity of 0.032, and even increases the UV resistance.
BASF's Neopor insulation material is made by adding inorganic far-infrared absorbers and reflectors to the original EPS raw materials, so it can block excessive heat from penetrating the insulation board.
BASF not only developed Styropor but also the innovative Neopor®. Like Styropor, this new modern thermal insulation material is foamed and processed into panels and molded products. The key difference is the silver gray that can be seen with the naked eye. For Neopor, an infrared reflector is added to the raw material. These substances can reflect heat radiation and increase the insulation performance of EPS by 30%.
Neopor® is composed of polystyrene (EPS). Small black beads in the form of polystyrene particles contain a blowing agent, so they can expand. Using German BASF) Neopor® as raw material, adopting European advanced production technology and introducing foreign advanced equipment, the foamed silver-gray foam is made into graphite polystyrene board (Neopor®), which is widely used in various fields. Graphite polystyrene board (Neopor®) was rated as an innovative invention patent by the country.

By embedding graphite particles, this gray-looking rigid insulating material can reflect heat radiation like a mirror, reducing heat loss. Rigid foam can be used in scenarios such as hollow walls, continuous insulation, and precast concrete.
