Hindustan Coca Cola Sets up Plastic Recycling Plant in Hyderabad

Chemical Weekly 2018-04-19

Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages (HCCB) in collaboration with Waste Ventures India Ltd, a social enterprise in waste management, has launched a plastic waste recycling project in Hyderabad. Through this project, HCCB and Waste Ventures aim to collect plastic waste in Hyderabad through a dedicated fleet of collection vehicles.

An estimated four-five tonnes of plastic is likely to be collected every day. The collected plastic will be converted into useful products such as T-shirts, fabric, backpacks and so on, to close the loop and create circular economy on plastic. “We are aligned with the World Environment Day global theme -‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ and we wish to combat the challenges surfacing from single use plastic. Our long-term vision is to leverage the scale and resources of our entire system to ensure that all our packaging material is reused and recycled to minimize its environmental impact,” Mr. Shukla Wassan, Executive Director Legal & Corporate Affairs, Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages, said in a statement.

HCCB intends to create a circular economy on plastics by closing the loop, connecting every player in the plastic recycling value chain starting from waste collectors to recyclers. It plans to initiate similar programmes across 50 major cities over the next two years.
