Reveal the latest trends in the oral beauty market

ECHEMI 2020-09-27

Nowadays, both men and women pay much more attention to appearance and facial skin than before. Beauty consumption has become the fifth largest consumption hotspot for Chinese people after real estate, automobiles, tourism, and electronic communications. In order to have a young skin, a decent haircut, and a toned body, people are willing to spend money and time on this.

According to Li Hengjin, president of the Dermatologists Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, while the beauty industry is booming, the public still has insufficient knowledge about the relationship between sunscreen, daily skin care, nutrition and beauty.

In order to explore the cognition and behavior of Chinese people on beauty and nutrition, and to provide a basis for the development and promotion of beauty products in the future, recently, the Nutrition and Health Food Branch of the Chinese Nutrition Society and the Dermatologist Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association jointly issued the "2020 China Beauty Nutrition "White Paper" (hereinafter referred to as "White Paper"), and interpreted the data in it.

This white paper collected 14,352 valid sample data, and conducted in-depth research and analysis on the needs of Chinese women for skin improvement, the analysis of the most commonly purchased beauty nutrition products, and the reasons that affect consumers' purchase of beauty nutrition products. Sun Guiju, vice chairman of the Nutrition and Health Food Branch of the Chinese Nutrition Society, believes that the white paper is of great significance to the promotion of reasonable diet and nutrition and skin care science work for the whole people.

Pigmentation, dullness and lack of water are the three most concerned skin problems

On the level of skin beauty needs, the white paper shows that the skin problems that consumers care about are pigment spots, dull skin tone, dry skin, wrinkles/sagging, enlarged pores, acne/oil and sensitivity/redness.

Consumers believe that the most needed nutrient for the skin is protein

The beauty of the skin needs to "nourish the inside and the outside." So, how deeply do consumers understand the relationship between beauty and nutrition? The white paper has learned through multiple questions.

In general, consumers have the highest awareness of proteins and Plant Extracts, and relatively low awareness of lipids, vitamins and minerals.

In terms of skin elasticity and moisture, consumers believe that the most relevant nutrient is Collagen content, with elastin ranked fourth.

In addition, consumers believe that the most relevant nutrient for skin whitening is vitamin C, followed by B vitamins and vitamin E, followed by Glutathione, procyanidins and cysteine.

In terms of anti-oxidation and anti-wrinkle, consumers believe that the most critical nutrients are plant extracts, followed by vitamin E, glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase, vitamin A and vitamin C. There are quite a few participants who choose not to understand.

It can be seen from the results that the consumers participating in the survey generally have a certain understanding of beauty nutrition, but it is not comprehensive, reflecting their preference for certain nutrients, especially collagen in protein. The awareness of vitamins and minerals is relatively low.

Aware that skin is closely related to healthy lifestyle

In terms of improving skin problems, the white paper shows that with the improvement of people’s overall health awareness, consumers have gradually realized that skin and healthy lifestyles are inseparable, and reduce stress is ranked first in the effective ways to improve skin, and get enough sleep , A balanced diet ranks second.

When choosing beauty products, consumers who participated in the survey believed that effective ingredients and quality were more important than brand and price. It can be seen that consumption patterns have returned to rationality and no longer blindly pursue brands and prices.

In terms of preference for beauty and nutrition products, consumers tend to choose those for external use and containing pure vitamins and minerals, followed by those for external use and containing plant compound extracts, and the third choice is for internal use and containing plant extracts. In general, more people choose external use than internal use.

Since collagen is a nutrient that consumers think has a greater relationship with the quality of the skin, the white paper also investigates the preferences when purchasing collagen. The results show that when purchasing collagen products, consumers are most concerned about "whether the collagen peptides in the product are patented or verified by clinical trials", followed by "whether they are recognized by professionals in the industry", and "whether there are celebrities recommending friends" "Recommendation and effect" came last.

From the above data, it can be seen that the consumers participating in the survey have a certain understanding of how to achieve skin health, and also have a certain understanding of the relationship between skin beauty and nutrition. At the same time, the white paper discovered the needs and problems of Chinese people seeking skin health and beauty, such as being unfamiliar with other nutrients.

Based on this, Professor Wang Zhu, deputy director of the Nutrition and Health Food Branch of the Chinese Nutrition Society, said that in the future, according to the four cornerstones of health proposed by the World Health Organization: balanced nutrition, appropriate exercise, adequate sleep, and a good attitude, combined with the research results, Look for "inside-out" nutrition and beauty methods suitable for the Chinese population, and design a promotion plan for large-scale implementation among the population.
