CII-IGBC Plans to Give 'GreenPro' Certification for Industrial, Consumer Product

Chemical Weekly 2018-04-25

The CII-Indian Green Building Council, which has thus far certified more than 370 buildings products as green products, is aiming to cover over 1,000 products by 2022.

Seeking to achieve the larger goal of sustainability with green products, CII-IGBC is now exploring ‘GreenPro’ certification for industrial and consumer products and technologies.

During the second ‘GreenPro Summit 2018’ held in Hyderabad recently, CII released a GreenPro standard for ‘Ready Mix Concrete’, inviting various stakeholders to come up with their views and suggestions.

Mr. ParasuRaman R, Chairman, CII-Green Products and Services Council, said, “The green building movement in India has created enormous demand for credible green building products, materials and technologies. Understanding this imperative, CII has launched GreenPro certification, which serves as a kind of eco label for various building products in India.”

“CII expects to certify over 1,000 products by 2022. In days to come, CII will include industrial products and technologies and consumer products for making them green,” he said.

Mr. V. Suresh, Chairman, IGBC Policy Advocacy Committee, and member of National Building Code, said, “As a result of concerted efforts of various stakeholders of construction industry, most of the green building products are available in India at a competitive price. This has contributed to reduction in cost of construction of green buildings.”

CII-IGBC estimates that the market potential for green building products and technologies is about $300-bn by 2025.

Mr. C. Shekar Reddy, Chairman, IGBC-Hyderabad Chapter, said, “Green buildings optimise the usage of water and electricity, use eco-friendly materials and reduce waste generation. Today, the incremental cost of a green building is about 2 to 3 per cent. The additional costs gets paid back within 2 to 3 years with substantial reduction in operational costs.”

As on date, CII-IGBC has facilitated over 5.27-bn sq.ft of green building footprint, across the country. India currently ranks No. 2 in the world in terms of largest registered green building footprint, Mr. Reddy said.

During the conference, the GreenPro certification was awarded to 13 companies and a GreenPro Reference Manual was launched.

ACC Limited, Akzo Nobel India Ltd., Godrej & Boyce Mfg Ltd., Honeywell Home and Building Technology, Kesoram Industries, Ultra-Tech were among the companies to be awarded the certification.
