The Conversion of Carboxylic Acid to Ester
You can convert Carboxylic Acids to Esters using an acid catalyst and an excess of alcohol. This is called Fischer esterification. Or simply "acid esterification".
How does this reaction take effect? The Fischer esterification mechanism consists of six steps. Each step is reversible, and all starting materials and final products are in equilibrium.
As for the first step in Fischer esterification, the carbonyl oxygen is protonated with an acid to produce an oxonium ion. Meanwhile, the resulting protonated carbonyl is an even better electrophile than the neutral carbonyl carbon.
The second step involves combining a neutral nucleophile (ROH) with the protonated carboxylic acid (resulting in the formation of C-O and the breaking of C-O (pi)), resulting in the production of a tetrahedral intermediate.
The following two steps are called "proton transfer". This is because there is a net transfer of H+ from one oxygen to the other. And the deprotonation of the O-H from the alcohol is followed by protonation of the O-H oxygen.
Steps 3 and 4 of the Fischer esterification involve proton transfer from the alcohol to the OH group to produce OH2.
The last two steps of Fischer esterification are referring to water removal and subsequent deprotonation of the resulting protonated carboxylic acid.
What are the Advantages of the Esterification Reaction?
A compound is formed when a primary alcohol is treated with carboxylic acid in the presence of sulfuric acid. This compound has a sweet odor. The resulting compounds are called esters. The chemical reaction that occurs when an ester is formed, like Carboxylic Acid to Ester reaction, is called an esterification reaction.
